Device Combo
Priorities & Concerns
What type of diabetes do you have?
T1D
What is your primary physical activity, exercise, or sport?
Cycling
If you participate in other physical activities, exercises, or sports, what are they?
Gymnastics, weightlifting, & dance
What devices do you use to track your physical activity?
Garmin
What devices do you use to manage your diabetes?
Android APS and Orange Link for connection
Why did you choose your devices?
I have had a pump for insulin flexibility for 25 years. CGM because the data feedback is great, the AAPS because it is somewhat automated, and less burden.
What challenges do you have around diabetes and exercise, and how do you overcome them?
Blood sugars are wild. It also depends on where I am in my cycle.
What would you tell someone considering the same devices that you use?
I love them, but when they go "down" I tend to panic. Know what to do if this happens, and have a few friends who can help you chat through how to fix it!
What is your favorite low snack?
Dex4 tabs, they're fast and the flavors have improved greatly.
Do you have anything else that you want to share?
It's a ride, and having a CGM that rings if you get low in the night is crucial. The automation works well; you just have to fine-tune it to you. It is worth it!
More Wisdom
One of the most impactful things about learning how to manage my diabetes during exercise has been the diabetes community. I have learned so much from others, even other T1D horse people!

I like the pump, but you still have to be smarter than the pump to avoid lows when exercising. I tried exercise mode, eating carbs first, etc, but it just doesn't allow for spontaneity like using Lantus does. For me, I cannot have any rapid-acting IOB when I start moving.

I selected the [Tandem] t:slim X2 because of how much [insulin] it holds.
