INSPIRE T1D: Working Together to Support People with Type 1 Diabetes to Exercise Safely

**Check back soon – we will have new information to share here!**

Welcome to the International Network Supporting Physical Activity Research and Exercise for T1D (INSPIRE T1D) page!

The INSPIRE T1D Collaborative is a global group that brings together researchers, healthcare workers, and community leaders to help more people with type 1 diabetes (T1D) to be physically active and manage their diabetes.

The group is led by Dessi Zaharieva, a researcher and exercise physiologist at Stanford University, and Chris Bright, Breakthrough T1D UK’s Community Partnerships and Events Lead and founder of The Diabetes Football Community in the UK. They work with others around the world to make sure people with T1D have the help and tools they need to enjoy exercise safely.

What INSPIRE T1D Works On:

  • Speeding up access to helpful tools for exercise and T1D
  • Connecting people around the world to share exercise ideas and research
  • Educating people with T1D, doctors, coaches, and teachers on how to support safe and fun physical activity
  • Creating new exercise resources that are useful to everyone, no matter where they live

Who They Help:

  • People with T1D and their families
  • Healthcare workers like doctors and nurses
  • Coaches, teachers, and sports leaders
  • Groups that care about T1D and physical activity

Why This Work Matters:

Many people with T1D don’t have the support or information they need to exercise safely. Some schools, sports teams, and healthcare workers don’t know enough about T1D. The group is working to change that by:

  • Making sure information is easy to understand for people of all ages and backgrounds
  • Understanding how things like food, age, and hormones may affect glucose levels around exercise

INSPIRE T1D is all about teamwork! By sharing knowledge and listening to the T1D community, they hope to make exercise safer, easier, and more fun for everyone living with T1D.
